Sales Engineer I

As part of the Sales Engineering team, it is your responsibility to identify and analyze the customer’s needs, transform Vanderlande’s Operations and Maintenance (O&M) product portfolio into added-value and assist in selling it to potential customers. In every case, the emphasis is on building a close partnership with the customer through solid solutions and problem solving, extending from initial analysis of the underlying business processes to total life-cycle support. You must have an engineering and process control management background as well as proficient working knowledge of Microsoft Office products that will allow you to communicate with internal and external stakeholders. You will report to the Services Sales Engineering Manager under the Sales Engineering Dept.


Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Manage and control the quotation process and planning in the bid phase.
  • Review/evaluate O&M RFP’s and other informal quote requests referencing established company guidelines, policies and procedures
  • Identify and communicate effectively with internal stakeholders (US & NL) involved in the process and keep individuals up to speed with changes and/or progress.
  • Engage and support the Sales group with proposal materials and on-site presentations.
  • Elaborate accurate solutions and site budgets utilizing departmental data analysis tools, methods, techniques, information and expertise, while addressing organization’s guidelines and strategy for profitability and risk mitigation.
  • Have the ability to analytically, creatively and independently influence decisions and gain buy-in of other peers.
  • Schedule, lead and participate in related meetings with other pertinent departments.
  • Advise Sales and gain consensus on selling and supplier strategy.
  • Manage time efficiently while prioritizing activities with minimum supervision. 
  • Assist Operations Mgmt. with site implementation of operating budgets.
  • Participate in budget consultations, identifying staffing efficiencies and site optimizations.
  • Support the BDM in the handover of project information to Operations for execution and fulfillment.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or similar
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in sales engineering, selling or assisting in a B2B environment with a potential extended sales cycle (12+ months)
  • Ability to travel approximately 20% of the time, domestically and internationally.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in operational sales processes and human resources estimating.
  • Material Handling Systems processes and Industrial Controls knowledge strongly desirable.

  • Excellent communication and social skills, high energy and an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Ability to analytically approach problem solving and applying technical concepts.
  • Ability to independently multi-task and work under minimum supervision.
  • Ability to plan and accomplish goals by relying on experience and judgement.
  • Experience and high level of comfort in presenting to multi-level contacts in medium to large organizations.
  • Ability to build and assist in presenting business development plans to an international audience.

Proficient user of the Microsoft Office Suite in order to calculate solutions, create and display professional presentations.
